Google is building everything around Gemini AI, which is why it has adjusted the refresh of the Maps app icon

(Patria) - Google is introducing a redesigned Google Maps icon, replacing the long-standing flat color design with a more modern gradient look inspired by Gemini.

The update is coming to both Android and iOS, marking the first major visual change to the Maps icon in many years.

The redesigned icon retains the familiar map pin shape but introduces several noticeable changes.

The top ring of the pin is thinner, while the inner circle is larger, giving the icon a cleaner and more refined silhouette. The biggest change, however, is the color treatment.

Instead of the previous four flat color segments, Google is now using a smooth gradient blend of its signature colors, creating a more modern and vibrant look that aligns with its newer app icons and plan.

The new icon reflects Google's broader effort to incorporate Gemini AI into its products and services.

Over the past year, Maps has received several AI-powered options, including:

1) Conversational navigation, which offers more natural, back-and-forth guidance instead of rigid voice prompts

2) AI-generated business summaries that quickly describe locations, highlights, and reviews

3) Enhanced visual search via Lens, making it easier to identify places and objects using the camera

By adopting a gradient style similar to other Gemini-influenced Google apps, the company is visually signaling that Maps is now part of its growing AI ecosystem.

Availability of new NotebookLM video and search options

The new icon is being delivered via server-side updates, so users don't need to do anything specific other than update the app.

2) Google Maps 26.09.05 or newer on iOS

The rollout is gradual, so it may take a few days before the updated icon appears on all devices.
