
(Patria) - Have you ever thought about what would happen if all people on planet Earth jumped at the same time?
A physicist and his team conducted an experiment for BBC's Earth Lab and explained what the consequences of such a jump would be.
This research was prompted by the fact that the 2011 earthquake that hit Japan increased the speed at which the Earth rotates, shortening our days by 1.8 microseconds.
They used a group of 50,000 people who were at the Reading Festival held in England.
Gathered to the rhythm of the music, they all jumped at the same time, and he measured the movement from a distance of just over a kilometer.
- With a little math, I can scale it up and see what would happen if everyone on Earth jumped at the same time and if it would change the speed at which the Earth rotates - the physicist explained before the experiment.
He discovered that by jumping, they managed to create a small earthquake of 0.6 on the Richter scale. But, he concluded that it is not enough to affect the Earth.
- Earthquakes do not affect the planet's rotation until they reach at least eight degrees on the Richter scale, and for that, you would need seven million times more people than currently live on planet Earth.
So, you can't move the planet if everyone jumps at the same time... You can't even change how fast it spins. There is no truth to that at all - the physicist concluded.
