DUZCE Turkey's Hidden Gem Between History and Nature

Written by: Amina Čorbo-Zećo

If you think Turkey only offers the crowds of Istanbul and popular tourist destinations, it's time to discover Duzce, a peaceful corner just three hours from Istanbul, situated between Ankara and Istanbul, in the western part of the Black Sea region.

Surrounded by forested mountains, this province hides numerous natural and cultural beauties waiting to be discovered.

One of the most fascinating destinations in Duzce is Konuralp, the only ancient city of the western Black Sea. Here, the remains of an ancient Greek and Roman theatre are preserved, and archaeologists are intensively working on excavations that began in 2013.

When the excavations are completed, the theatre will once again become a venue for performances, and a museum is planned to preserve all the discovered treasures. Among the most interesting findings are a mosaic in honour of the god Dionysus, statues of Apollo and Alexander the Great, and stone tickets for entry to the theatre.

The spirit of antiquity is further brought to life by a walk through the small museum beneath the theatre, which reveals life in this area several centuries ago. Interestingly, visitors from Bosnia and Herzegovina will recognise similarities with old Bosnian houses in Vratnik or Bistrik.

Visits are currently facilitated by archaeologists or staff (only cats roam freely, as everywhere in Turkey), and after the tour, visitors are greeted by a charming café next to the theatre, offering coffee and hibiscus juice, with a view of the ancient city and surrounding mountains. The owner of this establishment realised in time that this gem would attract many tourists, so she turned an old house into a café where she serves several types of coffee and Turkish tea. The hibiscus juice, 'jealously' reserved exclusively for her guests, is homemade and cannot be purchased.

For those seeking peace in nature, Duzce offers many opportunities. Hotels by the lakes provide a perfect escape from the city bustle; in the evening you enjoy the silence while the morning chirping of birds evokes a feeling of complete relaxation. The complex is also used by Fenerbahçe football players, and spa centres and restaurants with traditional Turkish dishes and sweets are available.

Guzeldere Waterfall and Lake Efteni are must-visit destinations for nature lovers. Descending 375 steps to the waterfall leaves you breathless, while Lake Efteni is a paradise for birdwatchers and anyone seeking serenity and silence.

Duzce is a place where history meets nature, and peace and beauty await every visitor who wants to discover Turkey's hidden gems.
