Dr. Ramadan: The Adhan is Proof of How Beauty Adorns Spirituality and Regulations

Spirituality and regulations in Islam are framed by beauty that unifies all dimensions of obedience to Allah and the life of a believer, says Dr. Tarik Ramadan in the 27th installment of Ramadan Chronicles, reports the Bosnian news agency Patria (NAP). Dr. Ramadan reminded that Islam has a deep spirituality, a connection with God in the heart, but that it manifests through adherence to clear regulations.

- Rules are rules, what is permissible is clear, and what is forbidden is also clear – Muhammad (pbuh) used to say, says Dr. Ramadan.

He mentioned an event from the life of the Prophet (pbuh) in which his friend came and told him how he dreamed of how to call believers to prayer in the mosque. He dreamed of the adhan, the call to prayer, and the Prophet (pbuh) listened to him and said that it should be done that way from then on. From this event, Dr. Ramadan draws three lessons.

- What the Prophet's friend dreamed of was divine inspiration. Muhammad (pbuh) took that dream and the message from it because it was true. This is not the only case where Allah (swt) communicates through dreams, and the Prophet experienced this. So, the dreams of sincere believers, like the closest companions of the Prophet were, can be true and can contain an important message, and we should pay attention to our dreams, remember them, and look for a message. There is something mysterious about it and something we don't know much about. But that doesn't mean we should be obsessed with dreams, but rather remember them and find signs in them – says Dr. Ramadan.

The second message, as Dr. Ramadan states, is that believers, true believers who dedicate their entire lives to Allah (swt), as the believers did during the life of Muhammad (pbuh), can reach a level where knowledge and understanding come to them beyond the rational experience of the world.

- And the third thing is the adhan. That call to prayer, which came through the dream of that Prophet's friend, carries the essence of Islamic belief and life within it. It testifies that God is one, that the Prophet (pbuh) was sent by Him to deliver the message to people. But the way it is performed is also beautiful. When we listen to the adhan and the beauty of that call, we feel and understand that in Islam, spirituality and regulations are done beautifully. Allah is beautiful and loves beauty, Muhammad (pbuh) used to say – says Dr. Ramadan.

Therefore, he emphasizes that the beautiful recitation of the adhan symbolizes and confirms the fact that Islam promotes beauty in everything a person does and seeks for it to adorn spirituality and the following of religious regulations.
