(Patria) - Maintaining optimal brain health is crucial for preserving memory, cognitive functions, and overall mental well-being, reports Index.
Therefore, one of the most important factors to consider when it comes to brain health is diet.
While many people focus on foods that support brain health, it is equally important to consider the impact of what we drink.
Our daily choice of drinks can either nourish our brain or contribute to cognitive decline.
Neuroscientist Dr. Robert Love, an expert in Alzheimer's disease prevention, recently highlighted on TikTok two popular, seemingly healthy, drinks that can actually be harmful to our brain.
Red wine
Dr. Love first mentioned red wine.
"I'm really sorry about this, because I really enjoyed it myself, and it's red wine," he admitted.
Although red wine is praised for its heart health benefits due to its antioxidant content, its effects on the brain are less favorable.
"Red wine is delicious, and there has been research showing it's good for heart health.
However, the research on the brain is quite clear: wine and alcohol in general harm gut bacteria, the liver, and increase the chance of inflammation," notes this neuroscientist.
Alcohol consumption can disrupt gut health, which is linked to brain function, and lead to inflammation throughout the body.
Moreover, it damages sleep and memory, two key factors for maintaining cognitive health.
Dr. Love advises moderation for those who still decide to drink alcohol: "Try to reduce the amount of wine you drink to one or two nights a week, and no more than one or two glasses per evening."
Sports drinks
Another common drink that many health-conscious people turn to is sports drinks.
However, Dr. Love emphasizes the hidden dangers these drinks carry: "Sports drinks have either a high sugar content or a high artificial sugar content, and both can be harmful to your brain."
High sugar intake is linked to a number of health problems, including obesity and type 2 diabetes, which in turn can affect brain health.
Artificial sweeteners, although calorie-free, are linked to negative effects on cognitive function and gut health.
Instead of sports drinks, Dr. Love recommends hydration alternatives that provide electrolytes without harmful additives. He claims that plain water is the best choice.
