As many as 60% of the world's population uses social media

(Patria) - The latest research shows that about 59.9 percent of the world's population, or 4.8 billion people, use social media worldwide.

Reports also show that, on average, they use six to seven platforms each month and spend approximately two hours and 24 minutes on them daily. However, some popular platforms are losing their favor, reports tportal.hr.

According to last year's report by TRG Datacenters, a US-based technology company, Meta's Threads app - which gained over 100 million users within days of its launch - saw an 80 percent drop in daily active users since its launch in July 2023.

However, in early February this year, Meta owner Mark Zuckerberg announced that Threads, their alternative to X, has 130 million monthly active users after launching the app in the EU in December.

According to the aforementioned report, many social networks and their apps struggled to remain relevant last year, prompting the organization to conduct a survey on popular apps that did not fare well with users last year.

The research showed that users deleted Instagram the most last year compared to other social media apps. It was also the platform users most wanted to delete.

More than a million people worldwide searched for 'how to delete (my) Instagram account' every month in 2023, which amounts to over 12,500 searches per 100,000 people globally.

- Instagram's prominence as the most frequently deleted app in 2023 reflects the changing landscape of social media preferences.

This indicates a dynamic shift in user priorities, signaling a demand for platforms that resonate more authentically and meet evolving needs - says TRG Datacenters Chief Technology Officer Chris Hinkle.

Researchers analyzed the nine most popular social networks in the world, as reported by Statista.com. Over 12 months, they investigated the average monthly search volume for 'how to delete (my) account'.

This included the number of people using each of these apps. Later, they used the global population to normalize the number of people searching for specific terms per 1,000,000 each month.

According to the research, 1,020,000 people wanted to delete Instagram in 2023; 128,500 Snapchat, 12,300 Twitter (X), 71,700 Telegram, 49,000 Facebook, 24,900 TikTok, 12,500 YouTube, 4,950 WhatsApp, and 2,090 WeChat.

Instagram has been at the top for years. However, researchers believe that over the years, the influx of ads and influencers - who use it as a space to promote brands - have hindered its development.

It should be noted that the platform still has over two billion users worldwide. However, if a million people continue to eagerly await deleting the app each month, it could spell its demise in the future.

On the other hand, Snapchat, launched in 2011, recorded around 130,000 people wanting to delete it each month. This platform has about 750 million users worldwide.
