Apple becomes the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer

(Patria) - American technology giant Apple surpassed South Korean Samsung in mobile phone sales in 2023, taking the top spot on the global list, according to data from research company International Data Corporation (IDC).

Apple's share of the global mobile phone market reached 20 percent last year, the BBC reported citing IDC's research results, with 234 million devices sold.

Samsung is in second place with a 19.4 percent share, followed by China's Xiaomi, OPPO, and Transsion, Hina reported.

The South Korean company recently warned that its profits could decrease more than previously forecast due to continuously weak global demand for consumer electronics.

Mobile phone sales decreased by more than three percent last year, with nearly 1.12 billion devices shipped, the lowest in ten years, IDC determined.

During the pandemic, people bought new models in large numbers, and now they are reducing costs due to high inflation and increased interest rates, explained analysts from the specialized consulting company, estimating that the market will recover this year.

Chinese Huawei recently launched a new line of mobile phones, with chips it developed itself, analysts estimate, as the US banned exports to domestic companies, citing national security.
