US Secretary of State called on Thailand and Cambodia to immediately cease fire

(Patria) - US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called on Thailand and Cambodia to immediately de-escalate tensions and agree to a ceasefire, the US State Department announced after phone calls with Thai Minister of Foreign Affairs Maris Sangiampongsa and Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Prak Sokhonn, TASS reported last night.

“Secretary Rubio reiterated President Trump’s desire for peace and the importance of an immediate ceasefire. The United States stands ready to facilitate future discussions to ensure peace and stability between Thailand and Cambodia,” it stated.

On Saturday, US President Donald Trump, after phone calls with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, stated that both sides had agreed to hold ceasefire negotiations.

Tensions between Cambodia and Thailand have been escalating since an armed incident on May 28, when
Thai troops allegedly opened fire on a Cambodian military outpost in the village of Techo
Morokot, located in a disputed area between the Cambodian province of Preah Vihear and the Thai province of Ubon Ratchathani. One Cambodian soldier was killed and several others were wounded.

Tensions flared up again on July 24 in the border areas of Mambaya and near
the temples of Ta Krabey, Ta Moan Thom, and Ta Muen Toch, the territorial affiliation of which is disputed by the two countries.

In early June 2025, Cambodia referred this dispute to the International Court of Justice of the United Nations.

Thailand opposed this move and unilaterally closed all border crossings with Cambodia. Phnom Penh responded reciprocally.
